Danish Modern Furniture

By Daniel Desmond

Scandinavian styles of home furnishing became popular in the mid of 20th century. For mail order catalogs that sold designs of Scandinavian and the styles that were seen in the furniture shops, Danish modern has become the name. Organic shapes and an emphasis on natural materials characterize Danish modern furniture. As a raw material, plywood was often used because it was easily to make into shapes that the human body adapts well.

Between 1930 and about 1975, Danish modern furniture has become most popular. In the United States, it gained quick acceptance especially after the 1939-1940 New York World’s Fair.

By selling Scandinavian products, shops in New York City saw notable success and all over the country, the style came to be replicated. Danish modern furniture came to symbolize especially after the end of World War 2, a forward thinking designs era that well-born from Northern Europe.

There was economic hardship and great despair, owing to the military occupation of many Northern Europe areas during World War 2. Scandinavian designers and craftsmen faced up with a lack of manufacturing materials, had to come with new designs and had to get creative. Many saw that old techniques of various crafts including glassblowing, pottery as well as cabinetry could be incorporated into designs of new furniture. For the future, this idea began to be popular and became an expression of hope.

In the United States, as the work of Scandinavian became famous, it began to reflect the American consumers’ tastes. The makers of Scandinavian furniture began to work in teak wood and rosewood since Americans were partial to darker, exotic woods. They are making pieces specifically for export to United States.

In Scandinavia, Danish modern furniture would not have been seen at all. Take for example, matched sets of bedroom furniture were build by almost every maker of Scandinavian furniture for export. This kind of furniture was uncommon in Scandinavia itself.

The American version of Danish modern furniture had made a significant departure by the time American companies began to make that style. In the 1960s, Danish modern furniture saw its highest popularity. In every price range and to every consumer, pieces by Scandinavian designers were available.
